General Notes (Wife)
Beauclerk [née Spencer; other married name St John], Lady Diana (1734-1808), artist, was born on 24 March 1734, the eldest daughter of Charles Spencer, third duke of Marlborough (1706-1758), politician and military commander, and his wife, the Honourable Elizabeth Trevor (d. 1761). Lady Di, as she was familiarly known, grew up at Langley Park, Buckinghamshire, a house much preferred by her father. There she enjoyed a happy upbringing, her taste for drawing developing early under the influence of Sir Joshua Reynolds. His portrait of her holding a sketchbook represents a woman of pleasing aspect with large, wide-set eyes and an aquiline nose in a long, oval-shaped face. This was painted when she was the wife of Frederick St John, second Viscount Bolingbroke (1734-1787), whom she married on 8 September 1757 at Harbledown, Kent. They lived partly at his house, Lydiard Park, Wiltshire, and partly in London. The marriage was not a happy one, although there were two surviving sons. Handsome Lord Bolingbroke, owner of the celebrated racehorse Gimcrack, led a drunken, dissipated life and was notoriously unfaithful to his wife.
From 1762-1768 Lady Bolingbroke was lady of the bedchamber to Queen Charlotte. On 22 January 1768 Bolingbroke petitioned to dissolve the marriage, for which an act of parliament was needed, on the grounds that his wife was carrying on an adulterous association. The bill was read for the first time on 11 February. On the second reading (26 February) a footman in Lady Bolingbroke's house, Clarges Street, Mayfair, gave evidence that since November 1765 Lord Bolingbroke had never been seen there, but Mr Topham Beauclerk often came and stayed the night. Once when the footman entered the room she was on a sofa with signs of shoes on one end and a great deal of powder at the other. The nature of Lady Bolingbroke's relationship with Beauclerk was further illuminated by the footman's additional evidence that, on 19 August 1766, Lady Bolingbroke had gone into labour; two doctors had arrived incognito, and a daughter was born (she died the following year). The third reading of the bill was agreed without amendment (8 March) and passed with royal assent on 10 March 1768.
Two days later Lady Diana married Topham Beauclerk (1739-1780) at St George's, Hanover Square. He was the great-grandson of Nell Gwyn and Charles II, to the latter of whom it was said he bore a strong resemblance. His brilliance in conversation is recorded, as too is his ill humour, the filth of his person, and the quantity of vermin in his wig. He is remembered chiefly for his close friendship with Dr Johnson, who was slow to subscribe to Lady Diana's attractions, despite Boswell's endeavour to portray her as a woman ill-used by her former husband. 'My dear Sir', rejoined Johnson, 'never accustom your mind to mingle virtue and vice. The woman's a whore and there's an end on't' (Boswell, 1.452). Nevertheless, by degrees he accepted her, and she was much esteemed by many of her husband's circle, including Edward Gibbon, David Garrick, Charles Fox, Edmund Burke, and others. Three children were born of her second inharmonious marriage, which led to a peripatetic life spent at Adelphi Terrace, Hertford Street, Mayfair, a villa at Muswell Hill, and then Thanet House, Great Russell Street.
During those years Lady Diana's artistic talents became particularly evident: she practised portraiture, and her enormous output of small drawings of fat cupids entangled in branches of grapes and little girls wearing mob caps gave place to larger and more ambitious groups of peasantry introduced into landscaped backgrounds. She worked chiefly in pen and ink, pastel, and watercolour. Essentially a designer, she successfully executed seven large panels in 'soot ink' (black wash), mounted on Indian blue damask and illustrating Horace Walpole's tragedy The Mysterious Mother. Apt to overrate her skills, Walpole placed these at Strawberry Hill in a specially designed hexagonal room named the Beauclerc closet. At the same time he opined absurdly that 'Salvator Rosa and Guido could not surpass their expression and beauty' (Anecdotes of Painting, 24.524). Lady Diana also enjoyed the patronage of Josiah Wedgwood, probably from 1785, when her designs, mostly those of laughing bacchanalian boys, were translated as bas-reliefs onto jasper ornaments, plates, and jugs; they proved to be enormously popular. In 1796 she illustrated the English translation of G. A. Burger's ballad Leonora and in 1797 The Fables of John Dryden; in both cases her illustrations were engraved mostly by Francesco Bartolozzi.
After her husband's death in 1780, Lady Diana Beauclerk moved to Spencer Grove, a 'sweet little box' at Twickenham, better known as Little Marble Hill, where she decorated whole rooms with festoons of flowers. Mounting financial worries later forced her to move to Devonshire Cottage, Petersham Meadows. She had kept a stout heart through all adversities, but her eyes were failing and she was losing the use of her hands. Old age brought her life to a close on 1 August 1808. She was buried in a 'notable grave' on 4 August at the parish church, Richmond, but this has now gone or is unidentifiable.
