BIOGRAPHY
After the premature death of Anne, Countess of Sunderland, her children were brought up by her mother, the Duchess of Marlborough. The quarrelsome Sarah had alienated herself from their father and---when Lady Anne Spencer, the eldest of these children, married Viscount Bateman she too fell from favour. Robert, briefly 4th Earl of Sunderland, died to Sarah's distress in 1729. Charles, then 5th Earl of Sunderland and later 3rd Duke of Marlborough, was more often out of than in favour with her. At her 70th birthday-party, Sarah was delighted to see 'all her branches flourishing around her', to which Charles muttered, 'Branches flourish better when their roots are buried'.
However, Sarah's favourite was John Spencer, a charming philanderer who could do no wrong. If he behaved badly and be ordered out of the room, he would jump in again through the window. He both showed her affection and delighted her with surprise visits.
In 1734, the fine house and estate of Althorp was passed on to John Spencer. He further delighted his grandmother when, she having drawn up a list of eligible ladies, he simply pointed to the first on the list---and that was how he chose to marry Lady Georgina Carteret. Their children became the delight in the old age of their old great-grandmother, 'Old Marlborough'. When his grandmother died aged eighty-four, John Spencer became very rich as she left him all her personal property on condition that neither he nor his son would take part in parliamentary life. However, he did not enjoy his riches for long as he died less than two years after his grandmother, leaving everything to his twelve-year-old son, John Spencer.
