BIOGRAPHY
George was still a minor on his father's death, when he became 4th Duke of Marlborough. By the time he was twenty-two he had taken his seat in the House of Lords and was Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire. Being the best catch in the country, it was the tough and not very attractive Lady Caroline Russell whom he married. She proved a good wife and they were devoted to each other.
He had inherited all the weaker strains of his father's character and they both appreciated the quiet life at Blenheim, as he himself preferred to do nothing in fear of rebuff. They enlived Blenheim with amateur theatricals in which their children performed. The Archbishop of Canterbury, John Moore, who had been George's tutor, was their constant source of advice.
In 1786 King George III and Queen Charlotte paid Blenheim a visit which, after much apprehension, went off very well. George lived at Blenheim for over fifty years and was responsible for many changes there, especially in the gardens after bringing in 'Capability Brown'. A great collector of art, astronomy was his real passion but he was also a hypochondriac.
In 1797, with three daughters married to aristocrats, Charlotte took a fancy to Edward Nares, an Oxford don who had participated in their amateur theatricals. However, when the Duke and Duchess refused to give their permission for marriage, the twenty-seven-year old Charlotte eloped. They then married without consent, but the Duke nevertheless gave her an annuity of 400 pounds though the Duchess would not allow them to come to Blenheim. For five years Charlotte was happy, giving birth to a daughter, but then died. It was only after his wife's death that he was reconciled to his son-in-law, who was by then Professor of Modern History at Oxford. He provided for Charlotte's daughter, Elizabeth Nares, who would later marry her cousin, Lord George Henry Spencer-Churchill, also George's grandchild. George survived his wife by little over five years and died 30 January 1817.
